Building strong teams as a leader is a multi-faceted task that requires a blend of skills, strategies, and a deep understanding of human dynamics. Human dynamics is extremely important as it determines team success. Dysfunctional team dynamics can create a ripple effect on the broader organizational culture. If left unchecked, it can foster a culture of mistrust, negativity, and disengagement, undermining the organization's values and goals.

Here are some key principles to consider when building a successful team.

Clear Vision and Goals

Communicate a clear vision and set achievable goals for the team. When team members understand the purpose and objectives, they are more likely to be motivated and aligned in their efforts.

Effective Communication

Foster open and transparent communication within the team. Encourage active listening, provide constructive feedback, and ensure that everyone feels heard and valued.

Encourage Collaboration

Create a collaborative environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, brainstorming solutions, and working together towards common goals. Encourage cross-functional collaboration to leverage diverse perspectives and skills.

Empowerment and Trust

Empower team members by delegating tasks and responsibilities based on their strengths and abilities. Trust your team to make decisions and take ownership of their work, while providing support and guidance when needed.

Recognition and Appreciation

Recognize and appreciate the contributions of team members regularly. Celebrate successes, acknowledge individual efforts, and create a culture of appreciation that motivates team members to perform at their best.

Continuous Learning and Development

Invest in the learning and development of your team members. Provide opportunities for training, skill development, and career growth to help them reach their full potential.

Lead by Example

Lead by example and demonstrate the values and behaviors you expect from your team. Show integrity, accountability, and resilience in your actions, and inspire others to do the same.

Resilience and Adaptability

Build resilience and adaptability within the team to navigate challenges and setbacks effectively. Encourage a growth mindset, foster creativity and innovation, and embrace change as an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Cultivate a Positive Culture

Create a positive and inclusive team culture where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels welcome and respected. Foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie that strengthens bonds and enhances collaboration.

Feedback and Reflection

Encourage a culture of continuous feedback and reflection within the team. Regularly solicit input from team members, reflect on past experiences, and identify areas for improvement to drive ongoing growth and development.

By focusing on these principles and adapting your approach to suit the needs of your team, you can build a strong, cohesive, and high-performing team that achieves success together. There is not one fixed formula in building and sustaining a high performance team. A leader needs to be able to pivot accordingly and adapt to the situation.

Case Example:

A new leader who recently joined an organisation stepped into a team made up of a group of disengaged and unmotivated staff. There was lack of trust amongst team members which in turn created a hostile working environment. Upon further assessment, he discovered that his predecessor had a top-down management approach and on a daily basis; only engages a few selected team members. This was seen as workplace favouritism by some disengaged staff. Social dynamics in a society are complex, even in the workplace.

Typically, supervisors and employees who form strong bonds often work better together. Managing favouritism in the workplace can be challenging, but is crucial for maintaining a fair and productive environment.

The first thing a new leader can do is to acknowledge the issue. Thereafter, take proactive steps to create a more equitable and inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and respected. It is important to establish clear expectations and performance criteria for each business unit and ensure fairness in evaluations and rewards.

Creating a collaborative environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, brainstorming solutions, and working together towards common goals sets the team for success. It is important to encourage cross-functional collaboration to leverage on diverse perspectives and skills.

Building connections and fostering relationships among coworkers is crucial for collaboration and a positive work environment. However, it's equally important to ensure that these relationships don't lead to favoritism or exclusionary behavior.

By promoting a culture of fairness and equal opportunity, organizations can create an environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best work.
